History of the Town Council

Pembroke Town Council has a history dating back over 600 years.

Early Origins

Pembroke was established by the Normans in the late 11th Century and quickly became an important medieval borough. It was governed by elected civic officials such as a mayor, and this reflected its status as one of Wales’ most important medieval towns.

Town Hall History

Pembroke Town Hall on Main Street served as the historic seat of the civic council for the ancient borough. The construction of the current Georgian town hall was completed in 1819. After its completion, it became the focal point of local administration, housing the council chamber, courtroom and market facilities. It also served as the venue for major civic events and public meetings throughout the nineteenth century.

Modern Town Council

The current iteration of Pembroke Town Council was formed in 1974 as part of the reorganisation of local government in Wales. This meant that many historic municipal boroughs were abolished and replaced by community and town councils. The new Town Council retained the traditions, regalia and ceremonial role of the former borough while representing the local community on all matters affecting Pembroke and its residents.

Pembroke’s Mayoralty

Pembroke is honoured to have one of the oldest Mayoralty’s in Wales. Our current Mayor, Cllr Jonathan Grimes, is the 647th recorded Mayor of Pembroke. This represents over 6 centuries of local leadership and governance.
